So what exactly is hypnosis?
Often people are nervous about hypnosis, mainly because of what they’ve seen on stage. It seems as though they are completely knocked out and unaware, and that I can make them do anything I want them to. Well, if that were true, yes it would be scary. But, that is not the case at all!
Hypnosis is simply a relaxed state where one can access the unconscious mind easily. Hypnosis is nothing strange or unusual. You are aware of everything that is going on, aware of the sounds in the room and the sound of my voice. You are not unconscious, asleep or a zombie. You are just very relaxed. It is very similar to when you have just woken up in the morning, and you are not fully awake, but not asleep either – you are in that in between state. It is a very comfortable state of relaxation where change can happen easily.
How can hypnosis help me quit?
The conscious mind is where we make decisions. This part of our mind “thinks” and this is where our willpower resides. This is the part of the mind that we like to think is in control. The reality is, it isn’t. If it were, you would be a non-smoker right now because you would just decide that want to stop and stop with no outside help.
The unconscious mind is the powerful part of the mind, this is where change must occur to be permanent. This is where our emotion is stored and where our habits are formed. This part of our mind “behaves”. When you first learn to do something, it is at a conscious level. You have to think about it and practise it over and over again. Think back to when you learned to drive a car. In the beginning you had to very consciously think about every move that you made. Which pedal is the gas? Which pedal is the brake? After much practise, all of a sudden one day it became a habit and you automatically hit the brake at a red light without having to think about it all. It became an unconscious habit.
The same thing happened with smoking – in the beginning you had to think about lighting up a cigarette. You didn’t start off smoking a pack or more a day, but all of a sudden one day, smoking changed from something you had to think about doing to something that you did automatically, a habit. And this powerfully conditioned habit exists at an unconscious level. This is why it is not easy to change it consciously. It is our unconscious mind that behaves, and therefore it is at the unconscious level that we need to access the smoking, and wipe it out along with all of the things that are connected to this habit.
